Industrializing a compact and mobile C-arm for interventional imaging
Allia™ Moveo illustrates the transition from an applied research challenge to a medical platform for the global market, thanks to a large-diameter, mobile composite C-arm with no visible cables.
- In 2018, GE HealthCare asked IRT Jules Verne to lighten the headband of its future interventional imaging system while improving its kinematics and vibration behavior.
- IRT Jules Verne mobilizes its expertise in robotics, composite materials, numerical simulation, metrology and control, and associates Loiretech with industrialization reflections.
- After several phases of design, testing, optimization and qualification, the roll cage is integrated into Allia™ Moveo. The platform is launching globally at RSNA 2025 and receives FDA marketing authorization and CE marking in December 2025.
Industrial challenges of ALLIA MOVEO
The roll bar is the central device of the platform. Its design had to meet the requirements of the medical sector and the constraints of mass production at the same time.
- reduce the mass of the roll bar;
- improve its kinematics and vibration behavior;
- guarantee medical safety and precision of movement;
- control costs and ensure industrial reproducibility;
- design a manufacturing process and assembly of extreme precision;
- transform a research demonstrator into a manufacturable product.
The project was designed from the outset with a logic of use, qualification and industrial transfer.
Technologies developed for the C-ARM
Between 2019 and 2022, several versions of the roll cage are designed, tested and optimized by the IRT Jules Verne teams.
- design of a lightweight composite structure;
- validation of mechanical performance;
- dimensional and vibration optimization;
- robotics and kinematics work during the exploratory phase;
- numerical simulation, metrology and control to secure accuracy and reproducibility;
- design by Loiretech of the manufacturing process of the composite part;
- fine-tuning of the assembly with the mechanical components in order to obtain a smooth and controlled rotational movement.
A final qualification phase is being carried out until 2024, in particular by means of tests on multi-cylinder benches carried out with the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers.
Results and industrial impacts
This collaboration has made it possible to make the transition from the laboratory to an industrialized medical product a reality.
- design, testing and optimization of several versions of a compact and mobile composite C-arm;
- filing of two joint patents by GE HealthCare, IRT Jules Verne and Loiretech, relating to the structure of the C-arm and the kinematics/robotics resulting from the exploratory phase;
- transfer by the IRT Jules Verne of research results, processes and know-how to Loiretech;
- industrialization of the C-arm by Loiretech for GE HealthCare;
- Ten additional patents filed by GE HealthCare, including three on integrated and concealed cable management.
- integration of the C-arm into Allia™ Moveo, launched globally at the RSNA 2025 Congress;
- obtaining FDA marketing authorization and CE marking in December 2025.
The large-diameter mobile C-arm with no visible cables aims to free up space, simplify workflows, increase freedom of movement and provide full patient access. Its wide aperture allows for Cone Beam Computed Tomography scans without mobilizing the patient's arms or moving ceiling-mounted equipment. The platform also integrates artificial intelligence tools such as CleaRecon DL to improve the quality of 3D reconstructions.

“The industrial transfer of the gantry is a concrete example of what collaboration can achieve when it combines vision, rigour and technical excellence. The work carried out by IRT Jules Verne provided us with a reliable technological foundation, which we were able to turn into a product meeting the highly demanding requirements of the medical sector.
Our role was to industrialise the solution for series production, while meeting the cost and quality requirements set by our customer, GE HealthCare, and ultimately enabling the worldwide launch of Allia™ Moveo.
Contributing to an innovation of this scale, as a direct continuation of French research, represents a major milestone for Loiretech.”
“With Allia™ Moveo, our ambition was to turn a bold idea into a solution that genuinely makes life easier for healthcare professionals in the operating room: fewer cables, greater mobility and more control, for the benefit of both patients and medical teams.
To achieve this, we needed partners capable of combining technical excellence, agility and industrial vision. With IRT Jules Verne and Loiretech, we found much more than expertise: we found the ability to co-develop realistic, industrialisable solutions tailored to the demanding requirements of a cutting-edge medical device.
This continuity between applied research and series production is the key to this entirely French success story.”
“Allia™ Moveo perfectly illustrates what collaborative research can achieve when end use and industrialisation are considered from the very outset. Since 2018, we have worked hand in hand with GE HealthCare to tackle an unprecedented challenge: designing a lighter, more stable gantry with completely redesigned kinematics.
This close collaboration between engineers, researchers and clinicians enabled us to validate a robust combination of design and manufacturing processes, which we then transferred to Loiretech. Seeing this project move from the laboratory to a finished product intended for the global market is a real source of pride for our teams.”
The industrial perspectives of ALLIA MOVEO
A french innovation for the global market
Loiretech has become the manufacturer of the gantry and GE HealthCare’s industrial partner for bringing it to market. The success story now continues with series production and the international rollout of the platform.
